Summary:
Care for all patients referred to the service during their hospital stay. Care for unassigned patients. Rotate night call with members of the internal medicine call group. Perform internal medicine consultations, as requested. Supervise members of physician extender service. (Intern and medical student supervision and teaching duties as required by UNE). Communicate with primary physician on admission and at discharge. Communicate with primary care physician if deterioration in clinical status. Communicate with home care and post discharge facilities. Efficient use of hospital resources. Cooperation with policies of third-party payors, consistent with patient safety. Implementation of agreed upon standards of care. Participation in clinical quality improvement projects. Establish and maintain good relationships with referring doctors. Participate in division meetings. Committee assignments as requested. Develop/Implement patient education protocols. Work with VNA to develop chronic illness management protocols. Use CPOE, when available.
The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.
Job Requirements:
Must be Board certified or eligible internal medicine (specify board). Must be eligible for a State of Maine license.
A MD or DO required. Must be eligible for Mercy Hospital Staff membership. The incumbent must have an interest in the care of hospitalized patients. Must have a commitment to high quality, resource-efficient care. Must possess excellent communications skills.
